Selection Procedure of SCRA

Selection procedure of SCRA (Special Class Railway Apprentices) Exam 2015:

UPSC will hold examination for appointment as Special Class Railway Apprentices in Mechanical Engineering of Indian Railways.

Vacancies:

The approximate number of vacancies is 42.

Educational Qualification:

For admission to the examination a candidate must have passed in the first or second division, 12th standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the examination.

Note: Candidates who have appeared at an examination or intend to appear at such the passing of which would render them eligible to appear at the Examination may also apply.

Age Limit:

A candidate must have attained the age of 17 years and must not have attained the age of 21 years on 1st January, 2015. (Upper age limit relaxation as per prescribed rules, e.g. SC/ST-5 yrs, OBC- 3 yrs etc.).

Scheme of Examination:

The examination will consist two parts as below:
Part I : Written Examination (Objective multiple choice type) carrying a maximum of 600 marks as below:

Part II :
Personality Test carrying a maximum marks of 200 marks in respect of only those candidates who are declared qualified on the result of Written Examination.

Medium of Examination:

The questions will be set in English only.

Question Paper Standard:

Question Papers will be approximately of the Intermediate standards.

Negative Marking:

There will be negative marking of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer.

Personality Test of SCRA:

Each candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his career both academic and extramural. They will be asked questions on matters of general interest, Special attention will be paid to assessing their potential qualities of leadership, initiatives and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, power of practical application and integrity of character.

Mode of selection:

Candidates will be short listed for the Personality Test on the basis of their performance (qualifying marks) in the Written Examination.

Indicative Syllabus:

Paper –I – General Ability Test:

(i) English:
The questions will be designed to test the candidates understanding and command of the language. Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc. writing ability.

(ii)General Knowledge:
History, Politics and society in India, Money-Taxation, National income, Economic growth, Solar system, Geography, Knowledge of human body, Man and its Environment, evaluation of life etc.

(iii) Psychological Test:
The questions will be designed to assess the basic intelligence and mechanical aptitude of the candidate.

Paper II – Physical Science:

Physics, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry.

Paper III- Mathematics:

Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential equations, Vectors and its application, Statistics and Probability.

Important points to be noted regarding Conditions of Apprenticeship:

(i) The apprentices will be liable to undergo practical and theoretical training for 4 years in the first instance under an indenture binding them, to serve on the Indian Railways on the completion of their training.
(ii) The practical and theoretical training will be given in a Railway Workshop for four years of their apprenticeship.
(iii) Special Class Railway Apprentice must pass within this period the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (Ranchi). There will be in all Eight Semester Examinations passing each of which is compulsory.
(iv) Successful apprentices will be appointed on probation for 18 months in the Indian Railways Service of Mechanical Engineers.
(v) The apprentices will be granted a stipend of Rs. 9100/- per month during 1st and 2nd years and Rs. 9400/- per month during the 3rd year and first six month of 4th year and Rs. 9700/- for last six months of the 4th year.
